Trekking and Hiking

What is Trekking?

Trekking is an outdoor tourism activity in which trekkers take long-distance/multi-day hiking/mountain climbing trips, crossing paths with various terrains to reach remote areas, mostly mountainous areas, where there is a lot of interaction with the natural world. Unlike other types of tourism, trekking has only one means of transportation, your feet, along with going to remote and dangerous mountainous areas and being greatly affected by natural conditions such as terrain and weather, so this is a relatively adventurous type of tourism and not for everyone.

The length of each trekking trip is decided by the participants, it can be from a few days to a year. The level of adventure of the trip also depends on many factors, including the careful preparation of the participants. Most trekkers often have to use maps and navigation skills to find their way, must have a first aid kit and certain survival skills to be ready for the trip. Most have to carry their own belongings and walk long distances for many days, so participants must also have stable health to be able to challenge themselves.

What is Hiking?

Hiking means hiking, which is also a type of adventure tourism. However, hikers (also known as hikers) often follow existing trails or paved roads, not moving into places with unclear terrain.

Depending on the length of the journey, hikers will prepare the necessary equipment for the trip, generally items such as shoes, backpacks, food, maps, first aid kits, etc. are similar to when trekking.

In Vietnam, activities such as climbing Yen Tu, Ba Den, Huong Pagoda, Ba Na... are also called hiking.

Both trekking and hiking are activities of hiking, climbing mountains or going to the forest. Overall, these two activities are quite similar. However, while hiking is mostly done on existing trails or asphalt roads, trekking is done on many different terrain surfaces such as deserts, rocky mountains, jungles..., not to mention having to find your own way and sometimes even explore new paths, so trekking is more adventurous and challenging. The biggest difference between these two types of adventure tourism is the intensity. Hiking is an activity with easy to moderate movement while trekking on many terrain surfaces requires more skills and sometimes requires specialized equipment to handle rough, jagged roads.

The equipment to bring when hiking and trekking is quite diverse depending on the activity, usually trekking requires items with better durability. Basic items that are indispensable in trekking and hiking trips are shoes, backpacks, first aid kits, food, maps, sleeping tents, etc.
